Shopify Plus is Shopify's enterprise tier, priced from $2,300/month on a three-year contract. For brands doing $1M+ in annual revenue, the upgrade usually makes financial sense through lower transaction fees, dedicated support, and advanced features not available on lower plans. Below that threshold, it generally doesn't. This guide breaks down what you actually get, what it costs, what Plus doesn't change, and when the math works.

What Is Shopify Plus?

Shopify Plus is the same underlying Shopify platform used by every store — the infrastructure, admin, and core functionality are identical. What Plus adds is higher limits, access to advanced features locked on lower plans, lower transaction fees, and dedicated support. It's positioned for high-volume DTC brands, multi-brand operations, B2B merchants, and companies with complex checkout or integration needs.

Shopify vs Shopify Plus: what actually differs

Most of the platform is identical. Same admin, same infrastructure, same themes, same app store, same checkout for the customer. The differences sit in limits, a handful of locked features, and what you pay per transaction.

Two rows in that table usually surprise people. Shopify Flow is on both — it is a free app on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus, so "we need Plus for automation" has not been true for some time. And B2B is on both, capped at three active catalogs below Plus; company accounts, net terms, price breaks and draft-order invoicing all work on Advanced.

What that leaves as genuinely Plus-only is narrower than the marketing suggests: checkout branding, the higher API ceiling, expansion stores, Launchpad, Organization Admin, and the 0.20% third-party gateway rate. If none of those six is a hard requirement for your business, the upgrade is buying you support and headroom rather than capability.

The customer-facing store is the same on both. Nobody visiting your site can tell which plan you are on, and Plus does not change anything Google sees.

Shopify Plus Cost

Shopify's published Plus pricing is $2,500/month on a one-year term, or $2,300/month on a three-year term (CAD $3,650/$3,400; EUR €2,250/€2,100). Above a certain volume, Shopify states that "more complex, higher volume businesses switch to a variable platform fee based on their revenue and business model." Shopify does not publish the formula or the cap, so treat any specific percentage you see quoted elsewhere — including on other agency sites — as unsourced. Ask your Shopify account team for your actual number.

This is a substantial jump from the Advanced plan, so the break-even analysis matters:

  • Third-party processor fees: Plus charges 0.20% on volume processed through a third-party gateway. Lower plans are charged more — check your plan's current rate on Shopify's pricing page. If you process significant volume through Stripe, Braintree or a custom gateway, this is usually the largest single saving.
  • Shopify Payments: third-party transaction fees are waived entirely when you use Shopify Payments. If nearly all your volume already runs through Shopify Payments, the fee-savings side of the Plus case is much weaker.
  • Staff accounts: unlimited on Plus. Useful for large teams but rarely a deciding factor.
  • Retail: the first 20 POS Pro locations are included.

For most brands, the direct fee savings offset part of the Plus premium. The rest has to come from feature access, support, and operational capabilities.

What's genuinely Plus-only in 2026

This list has shrunk, and a lot of published guidance — including guidance we had up until recently — is out of date. Several features that were Plus-only two years ago are now available further down the plan ladder.

Advanced checkout customization: the Checkout Branding API requires a Plus plan or a development store. Standard checkout customization is available from Basic upward; the deeper branding and the apps that modify the information, shipping and payment steps are the Plus tier.

Higher API rate limits: the GraphQL Admin API is 100 points/second on standard plans and 1,000 points/second on Plus — a 10x increase, not the 2x often quoted. Shopify for enterprise is 2,000. Meaningful for stores with heavy integration workloads.

Expansion stores: your main store plus 9 expansion stores are included. Additional stores are $300/month each, or a revenue share across all stores.

Launchpad: scheduling and automating sales events, product launches and theme changes. Useful for drops, BFCM and timed campaigns.

Organization Admin: central management of multiple stores, users and permissions.

Support: 24/7 priority phone and chat support with faster response SLAs.

What is no longer Plus-only

  • Shopify Flow is not a Plus feature. Shopify describes it as "a free app available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Plus plans." The Send HTTP Request action requires Grow or above, and custom tasks from partner apps are Plus-only — but the automation itself is available to almost everyone.
  • B2B is largely not Plus-only either. Company accounts, company locations, net payment terms, ACH, vaulted cards, quantity rules and price breaks, draft-order-to-invoice, PO numbers and the Trade theme are all available on Basic, Grow and Advanced, capped at three active catalogs. Plus adds unlimited catalogs, direct company catalogs for customer-level pricing, deposits, partial payments, and payment requests per fulfillment. If your B2B need is "a few wholesale accounts with net terms," you do not need Plus for it.

What Plus doesn't change

Worth saying plainly, because it's where most disappointed upgrades come from.

  • It doesn't make your store faster. Same infrastructure. Speed problems on Plus are the same theme, app and image problems they were on Advanced.
  • It doesn't fix conversion. Plus gives you more levers to test with; it doesn't tell you which to pull. If the product pages weren't converting before, they won't convert on Plus.
  • It doesn't reduce app dependence by itself. You still run the same app stack unless you deliberately replace apps with Functions and Flow.
  • It doesn't come with a team. Priority support answers platform questions. It does not build your integrations, run your migration, or own your roadmap.
  • It doesn't change your SEO. Same URL structure, same rendering, same everything Google sees.

A deadline to check before you decide

If you're currently on a non-Plus plan with checkout customizations running through checkout.liquid, additional scripts, or apps using script tags on your Thank you and Order status pages, Shopify's migration deadline is 26 August 2026. Plus stores passed the equivalent deadline on 28 August 2025, and Shopify began automatic upgrades in January 2026, at which point remaining customizations were lost.

This matters to the upgrade decision in both directions: if you're migrating that work anyway, it's a natural moment to reassess the plan — but "we need Plus to keep our checkout customizations" is no longer a good reason on its own, because the old customization method is going away regardless.

When Shopify Plus Makes Sense

The upgrade math is driven by four factors. When several of these apply, Plus pays for itself:

  1. Revenue threshold: Most brands hit the break-even around $1M in annual revenue. Below that, the base price is hard to justify unless one of the other factors is a strict requirement.
  2. Third-party payment processing: if you're required to use Stripe, Braintree, or a custom gateway — B2B with custom terms, specific international markets, particular PayPal configurations — the 0.20% Plus rate compounds quickly against your volume.
  3. Checkout customization needs: if your business model requires branding and checkout behaviour beyond what standard plans allow, Plus is effectively required.
  4. Multi-store or multi-brand operations: running three or more storefronts across brands or markets is significantly easier on Plus, both operationally and from a licensing perspective.

When Shopify Plus Doesn't Make Sense (Yet)

  • Revenue under $750K/year: the Plus premium is hard to justify. Upgrading early to "grow into" Plus is generally a mistake — the money is better spent on marketing or product.
  • Simple catalogs with standard checkout: if you use the default checkout, don't need custom discount logic, and run a single brand in a single market, there's little functional difference on Plus.
  • Volume primarily through Shopify Payments: the third-party fee savings don't apply, so a large part of the financial case disappears.
  • You want B2B or Flow: check whether the non-Plus version covers you first. It often does now.

Shopify Plus vs. Alternatives

Shopify Plus vs. BigCommerce Enterprise: comparable pricing tier. BigCommerce has a reputation for strong out-of-the-box B2B features but a less developed app ecosystem. For most DTC brands, Plus is the stronger choice; for some B2B-heavy use cases, BigCommerce can be competitive.

Shopify Plus vs. Salesforce Commerce Cloud / Adobe Commerce: a different league of complexity and cost once implementation is included. Makes sense for very large enterprises with deep custom requirements; overkill for the vast majority of DTC brands.

Shopify Plus vs. a custom platform: some brands at $50M+ consider building custom. Almost always a mistake for DTC — the opportunity cost of engineering resources doing platform work instead of business work is enormous. Plus's headless capabilities (Hydrogen, Storefront API) cover the customization use cases that used to require custom builds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Shopify Plus cost?

Shopify publishes $2,500/month on a one-year term and $2,300/month on a three-year term. Higher-volume businesses move to a variable platform fee based on revenue and business model, which Shopify does not publish. Any specific percentage or cap you see quoted is not from Shopify.

What's the minimum revenue for Shopify Plus?

There's no hard minimum, but the break-even for most brands lands around $1M in annual revenue. Below that, Advanced usually covers the same functional needs without the cost premium.

Is Shopify B2B only on Plus?

No, not any more. Company accounts, net terms, price breaks and draft-order invoicing are available on Basic, Grow and Advanced, capped at three active catalogs. Plus adds unlimited catalogs, customer-level pricing, deposits and partial payments.

Do I need Plus for Shopify Flow?

No. Shopify Flow is a free app available on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. Send HTTP Request requires Grow or above, and custom tasks from partner apps are Plus-only.

How much higher are the API limits on Plus?

The GraphQL Admin API runs at 100 points/second on standard plans and 1,000 on Plus — 10x, not the 2x that circulates widely. Shopify for enterprise is 2,000.

Can I downgrade from Shopify Plus?

Yes, though contract terms vary. Most Plus contracts are multi-year agreements and downgrading mid-contract may trigger fees. Discuss downgrade terms with your Shopify account team before signing.

Is Shopify Plus worth it for a $500K/year store?

Usually not. The Plus premium over Advanced is roughly $23,000/year, and a $500K/year store is unlikely to recover that through fee savings or feature usage. Most brands at this revenue level are better served by investing the difference in marketing or product development until they hit the $1M threshold.
