Shopify POS Lite is the free point-of-sale app included with every Shopify plan. It covers the essentials for in-person selling — product and inventory management, payment processing, customer profiles, and basic staff permissions — without any additional monthly cost. For merchants doing occasional in-person sales at markets, pop-ups, or a single retail location, it's often everything they need.

This guide covers exactly what Shopify POS Lite includes, what it doesn't, how it compares to POS Pro, and how to decide which one is right for your business.

What Is Shopify POS Lite?

Shopify POS Lite is the entry-level version of Shopify's point-of-sale system, available as an app on iOS and Android. It comes included at no extra charge with every Shopify subscription — Basic, Shopify, Advanced, and Shopify Plus. You don't need to activate it separately; it's available as soon as you install the Shopify POS app.

POS Lite is designed for merchants who sell in person occasionally or in low-volume settings: pop-up shops, farmers markets, craft fairs, small boutiques, and similar contexts. It syncs automatically with your Shopify online store, so inventory, customer data, and order history are consistent across channels.

Shopify POS Lite Features

Product and Inventory Management

POS Lite gives you access to your full Shopify product catalog — there's no limit on the number of products, variants, or collections you can sell in person. Inventory updates in real time across your online store and any POS location as sales are made, so you're not manually reconciling stock counts at the end of the day.

You can search products by title, SKU, or barcode, apply discounts at the cart or line-item level, and process exchanges or refunds directly from the app. Basic inventory receiving is supported, though more advanced purchase order workflows are a POS Pro feature.

Payment Processing

POS Lite accepts all major credit and debit cards via Shopify's card readers, as well as cash, gift cards, and split payments. When using Shopify Payments, there are no additional transaction fees for in-person sales — you pay the card rate for your plan (starting at 2.4% + 0¢ on Basic, lower on higher-tier plans).

Tap, chip, and swipe are all supported depending on which Shopify card reader you use. The Shopify Tap & Chip Reader and the Shopify POS Go device are both compatible with POS Lite.

Customer Management

You can look up existing customer profiles during checkout, add new customers, and attach orders to customer records for purchase history tracking. Email receipts can be sent at checkout. Customer tags and notes are accessible, letting you flag VIPs, wholesale accounts, or other segments.

Loyalty program integrations (via third-party apps) are compatible with POS Lite, though the native loyalty and referral features in Shopify are limited without additional apps or a Shopify Plus subscription.

Staff Management

POS Lite supports assigning unique PINs to staff members so each employee logs in separately. You can set basic staff permissions to control what actions employees can perform — processing refunds, applying discounts, or accessing reports, for example. The number of staff accounts available depends on your Shopify plan (Basic includes 2, Shopify includes 5, Advanced includes 15).

Smart Grid Customization

The POS home screen — called the Smart Grid — is customizable in both Lite and Pro. You can pin frequently used products, discount tiles, custom sale items, and shortcuts to speed up checkout. This is particularly useful for merchants with a core set of products they sell repeatedly at events.

Hardware Compatibility

POS Lite works with Shopify's full range of hardware: card readers, barcode scanners, receipt printers, cash drawers, and the Shopify POS Go handheld device. Hardware can be purchased directly from Shopify or sourced from compatible third parties.

What Shopify POS Lite Does Not Include

POS Lite covers the basics well, but several features are exclusive to POS Pro. If any of the following are important to your operation, POS Pro (currently $89/month per location) is worth evaluating:

Unlimited staff registers: POS Lite limits you to one active register per location. POS Pro allows unlimited registers, which is essential for multi-checkout retail environments.

Advanced inventory management: Receiving purchase orders, conducting inventory counts, and managing inventory transfers between locations require POS Pro.

In-store analytics and reports: Detailed POS-specific reporting — sales by staff, end-of-day reports, retail analytics — is a Pro feature. Lite gives you basic order history.

Printed receipt customization: Custom branded receipt templates with logos and tailored layouts are only available in POS Pro.

Exchanges: Processing like-for-like exchanges natively at the POS (rather than manually) requires POS Pro.

Local delivery and pickup management: The workflow tools for managing local delivery orders and curbside pickup are Pro-only.

Shopify POS Lite vs. POS Pro: Which Do You Need?

The simplest way to decide: if you're running a single-register operation with occasional or low-volume in-person sales, POS Lite is almost certainly sufficient. If you're running a staffed retail store as a primary or significant sales channel — especially with multiple registers, a need for granular inventory management, or detailed staff reporting — POS Pro is worth the additional $89/month per location.

Many Shopify merchants start on POS Lite and upgrade to Pro as their retail operation grows. Since Lite is included in your existing Shopify plan, there's no cost to start there and evaluate what you're missing before committing to Pro.

How to Get Started with Shopify POS Lite

If you're already on a Shopify plan, POS Lite is available immediately — download the Shopify POS app from the App Store or Google Play, log in with your Shopify credentials, and your products, customers, and settings will sync automatically. You don't need to configure anything separately in your Shopify admin to activate it.

To accept card payments, you'll need at least one Shopify card reader. The Tap & Chip Reader ($49) is the most common starting point for merchants new to in-person selling.

If you're building out a more complete retail presence — a permanent location, omnichannel inventory management, or a Shopify POS setup integrated with your e-commerce store — First Pier's Shopify POS implementation services cover the full setup, hardware sourcing, and staff training process.
